Here’s where Nashville gets trickier than most of the state, and I’m not going to pretend otherwise just to sell you a course.

The General Sessions Court of Metropolitan Nashville and Davidson County runs its own traffic school. Not a partner program, not an approved vendor list. Their own thing, certified through the National Safety Council, offered both in person and online. They’ve got classes like First Offender Training and their own 4-hour Defensive Driving course. Depending on what you were cited for, the court might tell you flat out to use their program instead of an independent one like ours.

That doesn’t mean you’re out of luck automatically. Davidson County has a bunch of municipal courts alongside General Sessions, and depending on who wrote your ticket, whether it was Metro Police, Highway Patrol, or a smaller municipality, the rules can be different. Plenty of Tennessee courts do accept independent, state-approved providers.

So here’s what you actually do: call the court listed on your citation and ask them straight, “Do you accept an independent, state-approved online course, or do I have to use your in-house program?” Takes two minutes. Saves you from paying for a course you can’t use.

Before you call, grab these so you’re not fumbling around while someone’s on hold:

• Your ticket/citation number
• The date you got the citation
• Your court appearance date
• The exact violation written on the ticket
