The eight most common moving violations that can result in points being added to a driver’s record.

Zero Points is the Sweet Spot

In Tennessee, your driver’s license comes with a driving record, and this record is how Tennessee keeps track of your violations. If you have never received any violations, your driving record will show a perfect score of zero. A zero score is the goal, because Tennessee and insurance companies love drivers with a zero score, as these drivers tend to be the safest and most law-abiding drivers.

Driver Improvement Program

In Tennessee, we have an effective Driver Improvement Program (DIP) that keeps our roads safe! It uses a point system to track traffic violations, assigning points based on the severity of each incident. For two years, these points stay on your driving record. It’s important to note that adults who gather 12 points in a year or minors with six points may face a suspension of their driver’s license.

The Eight Most Common Violations

  1. Speeding: Occurs when you go beyond the posted speed limit, and the penalties can vary based on how fast you’re going and where you are, like in school zones or construction areas. Points added to your driving record can be from one to eight, depending on the speed over the limit. Fines can range from $50 to $500, which can add up! However, there’s good news! Many counties in Tennessee offer a fantastic opportunity to complete a state-approved Defensive Driving course. Not only can this help dismiss your ticket, but it also keeps your driving record clean.
  2. Running a Red Light or Stop Sign: Failing to stop at a red light or stop sign usually results in 4 points and a fine ranging from $50 to $100.
  3. Reckless Driving: Driving a vehicle without regard for the safety of others or property can result in up to six points on your license, fines of up to $1,000, and potentially lead to jail time.
  4. Failure to Yield: Failing to give the right of way to another vehicle or pedestrian when required typically results in a $100 fine and four points.
  5. Texting While Driving: Violating Tennessee’s hands-free law by using a phone to text, email or record/watch videos while driving. This is a Class C Misdemeanor that carries six points, with fines of $50 for the first/second offenses, $100 for a third offense, or $200 in work or school zones if a crash occurs.
  6. Improper Passing: Passing another car on the shoulder or in an emergency lane is four points and a fine of $50-$500.
  7. Following too Closely: Tailgating is 3 points and possibly a $50 fine.
  8. Passing a Stopped School Bus: Failing to stop for a school bus loading or unloading passengers carries eight points and significant fines.
